EVELYN CABALE AUSTERO is a dear daughter, sister, aunt, godmother, colleague, and friend. Fondly called Ate Belen by family and Ate E by colleagues, friends, students, and alumni of Miriam College, she is someone who permanently has a cheerful disposition, dedication to her work, and unconditional love for children of all ages.

Everyone who knows her identifies her to be the ever-so-energetic and lively little lady who works with zest during the daytime, attends Zumba class afterwork work hours, and still have energy to spend time with friends, pamangkin (niece/nephew) or a beloved inaanak (godchild).

She especially loves chicken, the Chuckie chocolate drink, and everything pink (obviously). She is famous for her “Mabuhay! Welcome to Miriam College!”, “Uy! Ganun pala yun?!”, “Oh, meron palang ganun?!”, “Grabe sya, o!” lines, among others.

She worked for Miriam College for 23 years, joining in 1997. Her first job was as Secretary of the office of the Director for Student Services at the Higher Education Unit’s (HEU). Then, in April 2002, she was transferred to the office of the Associate Dean for Student Affairs (ADSA)/Office of the Student Affairs (OSA) as Senior Secretary until May 2019, from which she transferred to the Office of the Student Services and Academic Support (OSSAS), handling the role of Administrative Services Associate.

Colleagues know her for her work ethics, readiness to help or act beyond her duty, and commitment to the company she serves. During the Enhanced Community Quarantine (ECQ), Evelyn was the designated errand person for her family of 5 – elderly parents, younger sister, and 15-year-old nephew.

Evelyn is not a COVID-19 case. She tested negative twice. It was just very unfortunate she was not able to keep up with all the stresses of work and home life during the ECQ – her immune system became so weak that her body got overwhelmed, leading to her death on May 10, 2020 (11:20 PM, Philippine Time).

With Evelyn gone, the family still needs our help as her Intensive Care Unit (ICU) confinement at the Fe Del Mundo Memorial Medical Center (FDMMC) along Banawe Street, Quezon City for 23 days incurred a bill amounting to Php2.6M (around $52K) net (after PhilHealth/HMO).

We knock on the hearts of the people who love Evelyn. Let us show our love for her, not only by praying for the repose of her soul and comfort for her family, but by actually helping the family she left behind bear this enormous financial burden. Any amount you will send will tremendously help. Those who are in the Philippines, a direct deposit or wire could be sent to Evelyn’s sister’s account:
